A fire significantly damaged a duplex at 1443 E. Broadway Sunday morning, while the occupants were able to escape without any injuries, fire officials said.

At around 11:05 a.m. the power went out at the structure, prompting the residents to head outside where they noticed smoke coming from the building, said Glendale Fire Battalion Chief Tom Propst.

Arriving companies reported seeing significant amounts of smoke billowing from the attic vents, he said.

Thirty-one firefighters launched an aggressive attack and had the flames out in under half an hour, Propst said.

One firefighter received medical attention and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation, he said.

A smoke detector on the property was found to be working, Propst added. There was about $200,000 worth of structural damage done to the duplex, while $50,000 worth of contents was destroyed.

The cause and the origin of the house fire is under investigation.
