Unemployment rates drop in Burbank, Glendale
The unemployment rates in Burbank and Glendale declined in December, driven by strong hiring in the retail sector as well as the government and professional/business services, according to the latest report from the state.
The jobless rates in Burbank and Glendale both dropped by 0.5%, to 7.1% and 7.6% respectively, according to statistics released Friday by the California Employment Development Department.
In the La Crescenta-Montrose area and La Cañada Flintridge, the unemployment rates dipped by 0.3% in both communities, landing at 4.3% and 3.3%, respectively.
Statewide, the jobless rates dropped to 8.3% from 8.5% in November and 9.8% a year ago.
Retail trade saw significant job growth during December, adding 3,700 jobs, according to the report. Government and professional/business services gained 2,100 positions.
However, the information industry lost 3,700 jobs, mostly in the motion-picture and sound-recording sectors.
