Prosecutors have filed charges against a Bakersfield man after Glendale police reportedly found a bottle of whiskey resting in a child seat and a handgun hidden under it inside his car.

Elias Alvarez, who was previously convicted of vehicle theft, faces multiple drunk driving charges as well as a firearm possession charge because he is a felon, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records.

Alvarez, 39, was reportedly speeding and driving with expired vehicle registration tags when he was stopped in his work truck at 11 p.m. Friday on San Fernando Road east of Glendale Avenue, according to Glendale police.

Officers approached Alvarez and then spotted a bottle of Buchanan’s Whiskey resting in the child seat next to him, police said.

He reportedly denied having any weapons in the car, but police later found the unregistered .32 caliber handgun under the child seat. Officers also discovered a bullet lying on the truck’s floorboard.

He later told police he reportedly carried the gun for protection.

Soon after, Alvarez was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun.
