San Gabriel Valley All-Stars’ shutout puts it in title game

Allowing two runs wasn’t quite good enough for a victory on Saturday for the San Gabriel Valley All-Stars.

But on Sunday, there was no doubt, as the pitching trio of Jonathan Hopkins, Nick Sergi and Joe Torres combined to give up no runs in San Gabriel’s 7-0 win over San Benito in an elimination game of the Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regional.

With the win, San Gabriel Valley, coached by Crescenta Valley High skipper Phil Torres and his Falcons staff, will play in the championship game at 5 p.m. Monday against Modesto, hoping to force an if-necessary game 30 minutes after the first game’s conclusion.

Hopkins started and went four innings on Sunday, with Sergi throwing two and Torres (Crescenta Valley) tossing the final stanza.

Offensively, Raul Camas (Glendale Community College) had a pair of hits, while the Crescenta Valley trio of Adrian Damla, Brett Klein and Wes Walker also had hits.

San Benito was the defending champion and was dealt both losses by SGV, with the first coming Friday, 7-2. On Saturday, Modesto defeated SGV, 2-1.

The UCLA-bound Brian Gadsby (Crescenta Valley) opened the tournament on Thursday, throwing six no-hit innings en route to a 7-0 win over Sacramento. Gadsby is set to get the start against Modesto.
