It’s gotten to the point where it’s become practically routine for the Glendale Community College women’s golf team to regularly win Western State Conference matches. The team is also getting accustomed to capturing conference championships.
Glendale College won its second conference crown in a row Monday afternoon, as it received a four-over-par 76 from Pattraporn Silawanna and shoot a 323 in a conference neutral-site match at Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark.
Glendale won for the seventh time in eight conference matches and edged College of the Canyons by three strokes Monday.
“To win conference for a second straight time is very satisfying, and I’m just super proud,” said Glendale Coach Greg Osbourne, whose team finished runner-up in the state tournament last season. “This time is a little more satisfying because we’ve had players who were on both teams.
“We still have to lower our scores and the focus will now be on going to the Southern California Regionals. We’ve so far done everything that we’ve needed to do, no matter what’s been thrown at us.”
Santa Barbara finished third (370), followed by Bakersfield (398) and Citrus (408).
The Vaqueros got an 81 from Thanawan Sriratchaya, an 82 from Jasmine Daniel and an 84 from Vicanda Ma. Silawanna, Sriratchaya and Ma were members of last season’s team that also won the Southern California Regional championship.
Silawanna, the conference’s reigning individual champion, said the Vaqueros continued to show improvement with each match.
“We feel like we are getting better all the time,” Silawanna said. “Winning conference this time feels good.
“I thought the conditions on the course were pretty good and I was able to do a lot of things.”
The Vaqueros will next participate in a 36-hole conference tournament, which will be held Sunday at Sundale Country Club and Monday at Kern River Golf Course in Bakersfield.
Osbourne said the Vaqueros will seek a top-two finish to extend their season.
“I’d like to see Pattraporn go out and win conference again,” Osbourne said. “We move on to Bakersfield and see how we can do.
“Only time will tell.”
