The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.

Robert Cartwright (Flintridge Prep, 2014) Stanford basketball junior: The former All-Area standout is back to form after missing his entire sophomore season when he suffered a compound fracture of his right arm during practice in November of 2015.

This past season, Cartwright was one of six Stanford players to participate in all 31 games and finished with 12 starts at point guard.

The 6-foot-2 Cartwright averaged 24.7 minutes and 6.7 points per game along with 110 assists, 56 rebounds and 30 steals.

Though Cartwright scored a career-high 21 points in Stanford’s 84-54 victory over visiting Washington State at Maples Pavilion on Jan. 12, perhaps the junior’s best effort came in his Southern California homecoming on Jan. 8 at UCLA.

The then No. 4-ranked Bruins defeated the Cardinal, 89-75, on an afternoon in which Cartwright shined.

The Flintridge Prep product scored 18 points and set season-highs in field goals attempted (16), assists (nine) and rebounds (five).

Stanford finished 14-17 and 6-12 in conference play to finish ninth in the Pac-12, while the Cardinal’s season ended via a 98-88 lost to Arizona State in the first round of the conference tournament in Las Vegas on March 8.

Kareem Ismail (Flintridge Prep, 2013) Macalester College basketball senior: One final award was handed out to the decorated Flintridge Prep alumnus.

Ismail was named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference third team for Macalester College on Feb. 28

The 6-foot-5 senior center earned his second career MIAC honor after averaging 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for the Scots.

For his career, Ismail finished with 1,387 points, which placed him fifth on the school’s all-time career scoring list.

Ismail had quite a few highlights this season, including when he scored a career-high 34 points on Jan. 21 in Macalester’s 95-91 double-overtime triumph versus Gustavus Adolphus College. He also connected on the game-winner with less than a second left to defeat Saint Mary’s, 78-76, on Jan. 30.

One of the more special moments came when Ismail and Crescenta Valley alumnus Dylan Kilgour each netted their 1,000th career point in Macalester’s season-opening 92-70 victory over North Central University in St. Paul, Minn. on Nov. 15.

Kilgour, a guard, averaged nine points per game for the Scots and ended his career with 1,216 points, which is eighth-best in program history.

Macalester finished 9-16 and 5-15 in conference for ninth place.

Kailyn Gideon (Glendale High, 2015) Pasadena City College basketball sophomore: It was a record-breaking year for the former Nitro.

On March 8, the 6-3 Gideon was named to the All-South Coast Conference North Division Second Team for Pasadena City College.

Gideon averaged 8.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game and her 52.9% shooting percentage was tops for PCC.

Her most noticeable stat, however, was a 3.8 blocks-per-game average, which led the state. Overall, Gideon finished with 113 blocks this season and 164 for her career, which are both program records.

Gideon was one of four Lancers lauded by her conference, along with 2016 All-Area Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year Alisa Shinn.

The one-time Crescenta Valley High forward was also named to the conference second team in her first season at Pasadena.

The 6-3 Shinn averaged 11.9 points and a team-leading 9.7 rebounds per game along with a 1.5 blocks and one steal per contest.

Shinn also etched her name into the Lancers’ record book when she recorded a program playoff record 19 rebounds in Pasadena’s season-ending 70-64 overtime loss to East Los Angeles College in the third round of the Southern California Regionals on March 4.

Pasadena City College ended the season at 21-10 and 4-6 for a fourth-place finish in the SCC North Division.
