Former Hoover star shines
GLENDALE — The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.
Zareh Zargaryan (Hoover High, 2007) senior forward, Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball: The former All-Area first-team selection finished with six points and seven rebounds Saturday to help the Toros to a 51-50 victory against top-seeded Humboldt State in the championship game of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Tournament in Hayward.
Dominguez Hills saw junior guard Robert Willhite sink a three-point shot at the buzzer to give the Toros their first conference tournament championship since 1987 and second overall.
The Toros will next participate in the NCAA Division III West Tournament. Second-seeded Dominguez Hills (23-6) will face seventh-seeded BYU-Hawaii at 2:30 p.m. Friday in an opening-round game at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash.
Through Saturday, Zargaryan is averaging 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 25 games played. He’s recorded 20 steals and 42 assists.
Kevin Dultz (Glendale Community College, 2009) senior catcher/pitcher, San Francisco State University: Dultz continues to put up solid numbers at the plate for the Gators, who have struggled of late. Dultz collected two hits for San Francisco State in a 13-3 road loss against UC San Diego on Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. contest.
Unfortunately for Dultz, he didn’t fare well on the mound in relief. He picked up the loss, giving up eight runs (all earned) and five hits in 2 2/3 innings. He also walked three.
Dultz is batting .275 (11 for 40) with four runs batted in and three doubles in 13 games played for the Gators, who dropped to 6-8, 1-7 in conference. On the mound, Dultz is 0-1 with a 14.85 earned-run average in three appearances. He’s struck out seven and allowed 11 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
The Gators did receive some good news from another former area standout in the loss against UC San Diego. Jason Ochart, who graduated from Hoover High and transferred to San Francisco State from Glendale college, pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving up three hits and striking out two.
Ochart, a former All-Area first-team honoree, has allowed one run and eight hits in 8 2/3 innings. He’s struck out five and not allowed a run in three appearances.
San Francisco State, which has lost seven of its last eight games, will next play at home against Cal State Monterey Bay at 3 p.m. Friday.
Matt Ashby (Crescenta Valley High, 2009) sophomore outfielder, University of La Verne: Ashby had an infield single in the bottom of the seventh in La Verne’s 4-1 victory against visiting Pomona-Pitzer in the second game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader Saturday.
La Verne swept the doubleheader to improve to 9-7, 6-3.
Through Saturday, Ashby is batting .259 (seven for 27) with seven runs batted in and three runs scored in 14 games.
La Verne will next compete in an association game against visiting Occidental College at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Sarah Salvo (Glendale resident) junior, University of New Mexico women’s golf: Salvo, a former Mission League standout at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, carded a five-over-par 77 on Saturday for the Lobos in a nonconference tri-match against Arizona State and Arizona at Wigwam Golf Course in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Arizona State won the event with a 293, followed by Arizona (295) and New Mexico (305).
At the Bruin Wave Invitational, which was held Feb. 28-March 2 at Robinson Ranch Golf Course in the Santa Clarita Valley, Salvo tied for 39th with a three-round score of 231. The Lobos finished seventh in the 15-team event.
New Mexico will return to action in The Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego. The event will run March 20-22.
