GCC tees off 2011 season

MEN’S GOLF

Glendale Community College in Tee Off Classic: The Vaqueros began their season Monday at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.

On the North Course, the Vaqueros, who won the tournament last season, received three-over-par 75s from Brennan Amirkhizi and Michael Timpson and a 77 from Chris Ramirez.

On the par-74 South Course, Jin Park fired a 75 for Glendale college, which also got a 76 from Vincent Lam and an 80 from Danny Fernandez.

The two-day tournament, featuring 11 teams, will conclude Wednesday with the teams throwing out the low score over the two days.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 64, L.A. Valley College 52: Nikolas Rhodes finished with 15 points and six assists Saturday and Suilaiman Sekamwa added 12 points and 12 rebounds to power the visiting Vaqueros in a Western State Conference road game. The Vaqueros improved to 16-7 and 5-2 in the division to pull into a three-way tie for first place.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

L.A. Valley College 56, Glendale Community College 26: The Vaqueros closed out the week Saturday with a Western State Conference Southern Division road loss. Glendale college (0-19, 0-7 in the division) began the week Wednesday with a 71-51 division road loss against Bakersfield College.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Prep 69, La Salle 55: Kory Hamane finished with 24 points and Jared Norsworthy collected 21 on Saturday to spark the host Rebels (15-4) in a nonleague game. Kenyatta Smith added 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks for Flintridge Prep.

On Friday, Smith finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks to lift the visiting Rebels in a 77-41 Prep League victory over Rio Hondo Prep. The Rebels improved to 5-0 in league.
