SPORTS ROUNDUP: Nitros win Los Altos Tournament

Glendale in Los Altos Tournament: The Nitros won the Los Altos Tournament’s platinum division on Saturday after they overcame a five-goal deficit at halftime to knock off La Serna, 14-12, in the championship match at Schurr High. The Lancers came into the tournament ranked first in the CIF Southern Section Division V polls.
Arman Momdzhyan scored a team-high six goals in the win for Glendale, which also received four scores from Martik Chatalyan and two more from David Papazian and is currently ranked third in Division V.
“The boys have been working really hard and it’s nice to see them rewarded for it,” Glendale Coach Forest Holbrook said. “We are reminding our boys this isn’t the main goal. We want to win a Pacific League title and then go on to win CIF. This is just another step in that process.”
The Nitros advanced to the tournament’s title match with a 12-8 semifinal victory over Long Beach Poly and a 13-11 win over Flintridge Prep earlier that day.
Flintridge Prep in Los Altos Tournament: The Rebels took sixth place in the two-day tournament’s platinum division at Schurr High on Saturday after they fell to South Pasadena, 9-8, after missing a five-meter shot with eight seconds left that would have tied the game.
“We are ecstatic, last year we were in the gold division and to finish sixth out of 24 teams in the platinum division is great,” Flintridge Prep Coach Dan Hare said.
Saturday was filled with some tough losses for Flintridge Prep after it enjoyed two incredible overtime victories Friday. Prep opened the day with a 13-11 loss to Glendale and then fell to Long Beach Poly, 17-4, which put them in the tournament’s fifth-place match with the Tigers.
Diego Delgado and Ethan Vandeventer both scored four goals in Prep’s loss to the Nitros with Delgado and Vandeventer adding three blocks and two assists, respectively. Goalie Brian Khin had a team-high seven blocks and tied team-highs in steals and assists with three and two, respectively.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Burbank Tournament: Host Burbank went 2-1 in pool play Saturday, winning five of six games as they split the two-game format with Viewpoint, but lost via point-margin tiebreaker. Advancing into the gold division, the Bulldogs lost in the opening quarterfinal round to eventual tournament winner Village Christian, 25-16, in the one-game format.
Also in the tournament, Holy Family went 0-3 in pool play, losing five of six games, and lost in the quarters of the silver division to Canyon Country Canyon, 25-11.
WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Glendale Community College at the Southern California Preview: Sophomore Grace Graham-Zamudia led the Vaqueros to a second-place finish at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa Saturday by winning her second race in as many weeks.
Zamudia’s time of 18 minutes 38.48 seconds was good for first place overall, which helped GCC take second behind Orange Coast College (56) with 74 points. She also won the Fresno Invitational last Saturday with a time of 18:34.
Nohemi Martinez was Glendale’s next finisher, as she took sixth in 19:20.44, with Lizette Gonzalez (19:35.93) taking 11th for the Vaqueros, who had Abril Ramirez (30th, 20:24.85) and Elizabeth Nelson (32nd, 20:32.84) round out their scoring five.
MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Glendale Community College at the Southern California Preview: The Vaqueros packed together to take third at Fairview Park on Saturday, behind American River (24) and Cerritos (72). Isaac Diosdado crossed the line first for GCC in 21:14.12 for 11th place.
Kurt Lutz (21:20.68) and Vladimir Diaz (21:26.11) weren’t far off for Glendale, as they placed 15th and 19th, respectively. Yeltsen Vasquez (26th, 21:40.47) and Enrique Ramirez (28th, 21:43.67) rounded out Glendale Community College’s top-five finishers.
