Sabrina Hatzer excelling at L.A. Valley College

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.

Sabrina Hatzer (Crescenta Valley High, 2012), freshman utility player, L.A. Valley College women’s water polo: Hatzer, the 2012 All-Area Girls’ Water Polo Player of the Year, has had little difficulty making the transition to the collegiate level.

One of six starting freshmen on the revamped Valley squad, coached by former Crescenta Valley Coach Pete Loporchio, Hatzer has compiled gaudy numbers for the Monarchs (16-8, 3-2 in the Western State Conference). Through Friday, Hatzer has accumulated a team-leading 121 goals, 66 steals and 39 assists.

According to Loporchio, Hatzer ranks in the top five in the state in goals scored.

“She’s playing with a lot of confidence, more than it was in high school,” Loporchio said. “She feels like she can play with anybody we’ve seen this year, and she’s continuing to get better in all areas of the game.”

In a four-team mini tournament at Pasadena City College on Friday, Hatzer finished with two goals, two assists and four steals to lead Valley to a 10-3 victory against Pasadena. She then contributed six goals, three steals and three assists in Valley’s 13-7 win against Miramar in another tournament match.

Valley will next participate in the conference tournament, which will begin at 10:15 a.m. Friday at Ventura Community Park. Third-seeded Valley will meet sixth-seeded Santa Monica City College in an opening-round match.

Patrick Donahue (Glendale Community College, 2010) senior wide receiver, Southern Oregon University football: Scoring hasn’t been lacking this season for the Raiders offense, which is averaging nearly 55 points a game, and Donahue, a veteran playmaker, is certainly one person to thank for the production.

The former Vaquero remains Southern Oregon’s most-trusted target after leading the team in receptions (54) and receiving yards (616) and touchdowns (seven) in 2011. Donahue has already bested most of last year’s numbers through seven games in which he’s hauled in a team-high 61 receptions for 795 yards and five scores.

Donahue’s numbers also rank at or near the top of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics. He is first in all purpose yards a game (191.4), fourth in total receptions and seventh in total receiving yards.

The 5-foot-11 senior is averaging 113.6 receiving yards a game with four 100-plus yard receiving games this year — besting the century mark the last three weeks — and is coming off his biggest game of the season in a 76-29 win over Montana-Western Oct. 20. He tied his season-high in receptions with 13, while shattering his season-high in receiving yards with 222, scored a touchdown and broke his longest reception of the year with a 69-yard haul.

Southern Oregon, which is ranked No. 7, and Donahue, who also has 53 rushing yards on six carries this year, is 5-2 overall and in the Frontier Conference this year and will look to extend its winning streak to four games with a home game against No. 5 Carroll College Saturday.

Jenna Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2008) junior libero, University of Washington women’s volleyball: The former All-Area member returned to the Los Angeles area for Pacific Athletic Conference-12 matches against USC and UCLA. The Huskies entered Friday’s match against USC at 17-2 and 8-2 in conference. Washington will meet UCLA on Sunday.

Orlandini played a role in helping host Washington top California in a conference contest Sunday. She finished with team-best 12 digs in the Huskies’ 25-23, 25-15, 25-15 home victory. In a conference home match against second-ranked Stanford on Oct. 19, Orlandini had 21 digs, but Stanford earned a 10-25, 28-26, 10-25, 26-24, 15-7 win.

Orlandini has recorded a team-high 235 digs.
