Vanes Martirosyan’s fight called off due to Ryan Davis’ injury

Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan recently predicted his fight with Ryan Davis wouldn’t get out of the first few rounds.

Turns out it never made it past the weigh-in.

The unbeaten light middleweight and Glendale native (32-0, 20 knockouts) said he got the news while on his way to Friday afternoon’s weigh-in that the 10-round bout set for the Nonito Donaire-Jeffrey Mathebula undercard tonight at the Home Depot Center in Carson had been called off because Davis (24-9-3, nine KOs) had failed to clear his medical examination.

“Top Rank [Promotions] was doing everything it can to make the fight still happen, but they’re saying no,” said Martirosyan, who hasn’t fought since Feb. 4. “It sucks. It’s never happened to me in 32 fights. I trained really hard for three months and it sucks that it happens like this.”

Lee Samuels of Top Rank confirmed the cancellation Friday night via email stating, “Vanes’ opponent had a medical issue and as a result the fight is off.”

Martirosyan’s manager and uncle Serge Martirosyan said he was informed Friday by Top Rank officials that the cancellation stemmed from an issue with Davis’ left eye. A story published on Tuesday on stltoday.com, which covers Davis’ hometown of East Saint Louis, Ill., quoted Davis saying he had cataract surgery on the eye in 2010. According to the same piece, Davis had a Feb. 24 bout against Deandre Lattimore in Las Vegas canceled when he was denied a license by the Nevada State Boxing Commission because of problems with the eye. He had since returned to the ring in an April 13 bout against Jeremy Parks in St. Louis.

“That’s what it was,” said Serge Martirosyan, who learned that a second MRI had been ordered by a Top Rank doctor Thursday night and the results of that test prompted the cancellation. “Top Rank did everything they could to get him approved, but if it’s something medical and the doctors can’t approve him, we can’t do anything.

“The problem here is they could have done it a week ago, or at least four days ago. In four days I’m sure Top Rank could have come up with something.”

Serge Martirosyan said he would meet with Top Rank representatives today to discuss the next course of action for his nephew.

“We’ll know something soon,” Vanes Martirosyan said. “They’re still going to try to do something for me, so we’ll see what happens.

“I’m ready for anybody. I don’t need to fight another tune-up fight, I want to fight a big fight.”
