BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Thanks in large part to a huge shooting performance from Kyle Currie, Crescenta Valley was able to open up Pacific League play with a key victory.

Currie finished with 28 points, including seven three-pointers, on Tuesday to spark host Crescenta Valley to a 69-58 home victory against Glendale.

Crescenta Valley, which overcame a 31-23 deficit in the second quarter, improved to 8-6. Glendale, which scored one basket in the third quarter, dipped to 5-8.

“Kyle literally saved us by making some big three-pointers,” Crescenta Valley Coach Shawn Zargarian said. “We were down by eight [in the second quarter] and we might have been down 13 or 14 points had he not stepped it up.

“You know going in that he can shoot the ball.”

Crescenta Valley received 18 points from Eric Patten and 17 from Berg Krikorian to capture the first of two head-to-head meetings against Glendale. Krikorion had four of the Falcons’ 11 three-pointers.

Glendale, which held a 23-16 lead after the first quarter, got 14 points from Eric Kirakosian and 13 from Tyler Lousararian.

Glendale Coach Steve Snodgress said the Nitros didn’t have an answer to solve Currie.

“We just lost track of Currie and I’m not sure why,” said Snodgress, whose team trailed, 42-39, at halftime. “CV had the upper hand in threes and made free throws.

“We had some defensive breakdowns and we only scored that one basket in the third quarter.”
