SPORTS ROUNDUP: Glendale Community College men and women’s cross-country pick up victories

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Golden West Invitational: The Vaqueros captured their first victory this season in defeating Los Angeles Trade Tech, 75-105, at the five-kilometer race at Central Park in Huntington Beach on Friday morning, led by the exploits of sophomore Elizabeth Nelson.

The former Saugus High star captured her first triumph of the season in outracing the competition to a victory in 18 minutes, 28 seconds.

Nelson was one of two Vaqueros to finish in the top 10 and was joined by freshman Glindyll Mancia, who took eighth in 19:11.

Teresa Villafuerte (20th, 19:40), Cailtyn Selve (25th, 19:54) and Kelly Castillo (26th, 19:57) were the Vaqueros’ final three scorers.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Golden West Invitational: The Vaqueros won their second meet of the season in defeating El Camino, 46-56, at the four-mile race at Central Park in Huntington Beach on Friday morning.

Mt. San Antonio College finished third with 61 points.

Sophomore Enrique Ramirez finished runner-up with a time of 20 minutes, 7 seconds, which was less than 10 seconds off the pace of Mt. SAC’s Christoph Uphues (19:59).

Steban Aviles (eighth, 20:32) and Jorge Serrano (ninth, 20:32) both delivered top-10 efforts for the Vaqueros, while Hoover High graduate Daniel Marin (17th, 20:34) and Jorge Mendoza (19th, 20:44) rounded out the scoring for Glendale.
