Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College men’s tennis opens conference with road win

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 6, Bakersfield College 3: The Vaqueros bounced back from a loss last weekend with an impressive road victory to kick off Western State Conference play on Tuesday afternoon.

The Vaqueros (5-1) split the action in six singles events, leading off with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory from Hosep Orojian at No. 1 and following with a 6-3, 6-3 victory from Dat Le at No. 4 singles and a 6-2, 6-4 triumph from No. 6 sophomore Santiago Segovia.

The turning point for Glendale came in doubles play, as the No. 1 tandem of Orojian and Lee (8-6), No. 2 pair of Hoover High alums Dro Dermegerdichian and Oleg Simonyan (8-3) and Clayton Pauff and Cameron Braun (8-1) all swept in securing the victory.

“This was a dominant performance and an overall great day at Bakersfield,” Vaqueros Coach Bob MacKay said. “Our effort really paid off in doubles.

“I told the guys before the match that if we don’t win, it’s going to be a real long ride home, so we might as well win.”

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 8, Pierce College 7: Nick Padilla’s two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning stood as the game-winner in Saturday’s road victory for the Vaqueros, who improved to 4-5.

Keaton Leach also had three scoreless innings of relief.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 83, Bakersfield College 50: Gor Plavchyan finished with 19 points and four blocks Saturday to spark the visiting Vaqueros to a Western State Conference South Division win. Glendale (20-4, 8-2 in the division) won its fifth game in a row. The Vaqueros got 15 points and six assists from Jalen Etienne, 13 points and eight rebounds from Santiago Grady and 12 points and seven rebounds from Emmett Duvall.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Bakersfield College 68, Glendale Community College 54: Visiting Glendale fell Saturday in a Western State Conference South Division contest. The Vaqueros dropped to 15-11, 6-4 in the division.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College in Battle of the Regions: Buoyed by victories from Lizette Gonzalez and Aisiah Tuiasosopo, the Vaqueros posted 109.5 points to finish second on Friday at Bakersfield College, with Modesto finishing first with 127.

Gonzalez won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes 20.27 seconds and also took fourth in the 1,500 in 4:52.62. Gonzalez was part of another winning effort as a member of the 4X400 relay along with Nandi Watson, Narges Motamedi and Glindyll Mancia , running to a victorious mark of 4:06.32.

Tuiasosopo won the discus with a throw of 121 feet 11 inches and was fourth in the shot put with a put of 34-7.

Lizzy Nelson also turned in a terrific performance, running to second-place finishes in the 1,500 in 4:45.33 and 3,000 in 10:31.7.

Watson took second in the 400 in 1:00.65, Mancia was second in the 800 in 2:20.85 and Justice Shanks was second in the high jump in 5-6.

Rounding out a terrific showing in the 3,000 after Nelson’s second-place run, Caitlyn Selve took third (11:12.09), Alejandra Quintero took fourth (11:16.63) and Kelly Castillo was fifth (11:17.13).

Janeth Mosqueda was fourth in the javelin at 81-9.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College in Battle of the Regions: GCC, highlighted by a win from Andrew Perez in the polo vault, took fourth on Friday at Bakersfield College with 109 points. Modesto won with 153 points and GCC’s Western State Conference rival College of the Canyons had 148 points for second place.

Perez vaulted to a mark of 12 feet 5.5 inches for first place, while teammate Jerrod Plummer posted a third-place mark of 11-11.75.

Glendale had further success in the field with Quaid Vuncannon taking second in the discus with a throw of 144-2. Vuncannon also took fourth in the javelin with a throw of 149-9, just behind teammate David Renteria, who took third in the event with a mark of 150-7. Christopher Uribe finished fifth in the javelin (148-8) and third in the shot put with a put of 40-5.

Marcus Streeter jumped to second in the high jump with a mark of 6-4 and was also a part of two top-five relays. The 4X100 relay, also featuring Jonathan Smith, Raymond Ou and Bryant Flores, took third in 43.74 seconds, while the 4X400 relay finished fifth with Flores, Streeter, Ou and Alejandro Chavez running to a time of 3:32.4.

Enrique Ramirez likely turned in the best all-around day with three top-four finishes. He finished third in the 800 (2:00.95) and 1,500 (4:06.50) and was fourth in the 3,000 in 9:10.46.

Alejandro Chavez was fourth in the 800 (2:01.85) and Edwardo Vasquez was fourth in the 1,500 (4:07.06).

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Glendale Community College in doubleheader: The Vaqueros picked up a 9-7 win over Grossmont College and an 8-0 loss against Mount San Antonio on Saturday at Mt. SAC.

GCC, which is now 5-6, got a three-run home run from Vivian Topete and a two-run shot from Cassandra Soto in the win. Cassidy Clark added a hit, three walks and two runs batted in.

In the loss, which came in five innings, Topete drew a walk to stop a perfect game, as the Vaqueros were no-hit.
