Sports Roundup: Hoover girls’ tennis opens with nonleague win

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Hoover 11, Maranatha 7: The host Tornadoes opened their season Tuesday with a nonleague win. Hoover received a sweep in singles from Jessica Chung, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1. Hoover’s doubles team of Raquel Piloyan and Angelina Khourdajian also swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

San Marino 3, Flintridge Prep 0: Host Flintridge Prep fell, 25-23, 26-24, 25-20, on Tuesday in a season-opening nonleague match.

The Rebels received 21 assists from Talia Yessie, 12 digs and two aces from Lauren Stiles and 12 kills from Dani Motte.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cypress College 2, Glendale Community College 1: The Vaqueros (0-1-1) fell Friday in a nonconference home match. Araiek Davoudian scored a goal for Glendale.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Vaqueros in Mark Covert Classic: Glendale kicked off its season Saturday by winning the event at Carbon Canyon Park in Fullerton. Jassmine Macon of Glendale finished second in the event, clocking 18 minutes 56 seconds on the 5K course. The Vaqueros collected 21 points and had five runners finish in the top eight.

Former Vaquero standout Grace Zamudio, now a senior at Loyola Marymount, won the Division I event in 17:59.9.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Vaqueros in Mark Covert Classic: Glendale opened its season Saturday by placing third with 91 points at Carbon Canyon Park in Fullerton.

Glendale’s Ricky Norman finished 17th in pacing his squad with a mark of 27:27.9 in the 8K race.
