TIMOTHY JAMES O’SULLIVAN

Tim O’Sullivan, a former broadcaster and labor leader, passed away peacefully June 18th.

He was born on February 2, 1922, in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Cleveland, and when he was a teenager, his family moved to Muncie, then Ft. Wayne, Indiana, which he always considered his home.

He started a career in radio as a radio sportscaster at age 17 in Muncie.

He served in the Army Air Corps 8th Air Force, 384th bomb group, in World War Two, and he was highly decorated, and he reached the rank of first lieutenant. He was stationed at Grafton Underwood, Northamptonshire, England, and met a local girl, Kathleen Teresa Cooper, known to her family and friends as Terry. After leaving the service, he wrote to propose. They have been happily married since late 1946.

They lived in Fort Wayne, where he worked as a newscaster for radio stations WOWO and WGL.

He later worked as an organizer for the broadcast technicians union NABET in Buffalo, New York, and Toronto, Canada, and in 1968 was elected international president of Nabet.

He also worked in labor relations with the US postal service, and as business agent for Nabet Hollywood Local 53.

In recent years, he was a commissioner with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, a US government agency that helps mediate labor disputes.

He is survived by his wife, Terry, sons Michael and Patrick, and grandchildren Christopher, Kathryn, Sean and Tommy O’Sullivan, and Steven Christianson.

Tim will be remembered as a great storyteller, warm and engaging, widely admired and greatly loved by family and friends.

Funeral services will be at St. James Catholic Church in La Crescenta Saturday, June 25 at 10:30 am. He will be interred in a later ceremony at the veterans’ cemetery in Riverside.
