Woman has lived a century in Glendale
Genevieve Fisher, a lifelong resident of Glendale, turned 100 last week.
Her next-door neighbor Diane Dixon organized many of Fisher’s neighbors and they came to her house to sing “Happy Birthday” and bring her birthday cards, balloons and well wishes.
Fisher was born on March 13, 1914, on a very rainy day, said her daughter, Rochelle ‘Bunny” Krieger. In fact, she was born in a hotel on Brand Boulevard because the floods were so dangerous, her family couldn’t get to the hospital, she added.
Fisher attended Jewel City schools from elementary to Glendale College.
In 1933, she married Maurice Fisher and, in 1937, they built their home on Norton Avenue, where she still resides today, Krieger said.
In addition to her daughter, Fisher has a son, Cordell Fisher, as well as four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Krieger said she was moved by the neighbors’ outpouring of love for her mother, who sang along with everyone gathered on her big day.
“When I saw the large crowd assembled in front of my mother’s house, I was amazed,” Krieger said. “I realized that my mother’s neighbors love Norton Avenue as much as she does. It was incredible to see a neighborhood come together to celebrate my mother’s 100th birthday.”
