Young Tae Seo signs up to swim for Florida Gators

Over the last three seasons, Crescenta Valley High senior Young Tae Seo has made a name for himself in area pools and beyond, assaulting Pacific League and CIF Southern Section record books en route to myriad titles, accolades and recognition.

On Wednesday’s National Signing Day, he committed his future to doing so at the next level, as the reigning Glendale News-Press Boys’ Athlete of the Year signed his letter of intent to swim for the University of Florida, roughly two weeks after giving the university his verbal commitment.

“I chose Florida because their staff is really great and [my future] teammates are amazing,” Seo said.

Including relays, Seo has won eight CIF Southern Section championships in three seasons, establishing CIF records in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and as part of the medley relay. He’s also won three consecutive All-Area Boys’ Swimmer of the Year nods.

And he’s ready to add to that resume, as making the decision to swim at Florida was one that he said brought about just as much relief as happiness.

“[I am] very relieved, excited,” Seo said. “I was really happy that it was over.

“Now I can focus on school and swimming. Senior year’s gonna be fun after this.”

The Gators’ men’s swimming program has won two NCAA titles and 33 Southeastern Conference crowns in a history that boasts producing a slew of Olympic medalists, including 2012 United States gold medalist Ryan Lochte. Currently, the Gators are undefeated this season after three dual meets and an invitational and are ranked second in the country.

Leading Florida is Gators Coach Gregg Troy, who coached the U.S. Olympic men’s team. Troy was a major reason Seo decided on Florida over Navy, Army and USC.

“Especially coach Troy,” Seo said. “I think he’ll help me reach my potential and reach my goals.”

Seo said those goals include winning NCAA individual and team titles.

For now, Seo, who plans on majoring in engineering, can concentrate on helping the Falcons repeat as CIF Southern Section Division II champions, a crown they won thanks in large part to Seo last season.

Still, it’s already difficult for the ultra-talented Seo to not look ahead.

“I just can’t wait for next year to be a Gator,” he said.
