Brazil’s Bolsonaro to delay surgery

The results of tests performed Friday on Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro prompted doctors to postpone surgery to remove a colostomy bag until after his Jan. 1 inauguration.

Bolsonaro arrived in Sao Paulo early Friday from Brasilia, where he spent the last few days putting together his administration, and went directly to Albert Einstein Hospital.

He was set to undergo surgery on Dec. 12 to remove the bag, which was attached after Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen during a campaign rally on Sept. 6.

Bolsonaro “is clinically stable, and going through an optimal recovery. However, the tests show inflammation in the peritoneum,” the hospital said.

The medical team decided to “postpone the reconstruction of the intestinal transit.” Instead, Bolsonaro will be evaluated in January to decide on the “ideal time for the surgery,” according to the statement.

Bolsonaro, an avowed admirer of Brazil’s 1964-1985 military dictatorship, underwent two surgeries after the stabbing, which kept him hospitalized for 23 days.
