Things to suit all dads this Sunday

They may all be fathers, but their interests and passions are as varied as can be. Here are some suggestions for honoring the dads in your life, in their own one-of-a-kind ways.

For the Rockabilly

Groundbreaking musician James Intveld will perform from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, with the Blue Collar Combo band opening for him at noon at the Orange County Market Place at the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. T

hose bringing a canned food item to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County will receive free admission to the concert and swap meet.

Five-year-old band Blue Collar Combo is the winner of the West Coast Rockabilly Showdown, and was selected to perform with Intveld at the Father’s Day concert along winning with their $1,000 prize.

Intveld, his brother Ricky and Pat Woodward formed their first band, the Rockin’ Shadows, and became well-known in Southern California. The latter two performers then were asked by the late Ricky Nelson to join his band. They went on a plane flight with Nelson that killed the three, leaving James Intvelt behind to begin performing as a solo act around the world.

Intveld also received renown for being the voice for Johnny Depp’s 1950s rebel character in the 1990 John Waters film “Cry-Baby,” and many have called him a Depp doppelganger.

Combine good eats with a good cause at the first annual Chill’N Daddy’s Chili Cook-Off Saturday at the Central Orange Coast YMCA, 2300 University Drive, Newport Beach. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Costa Mesa, the event benefits the YMCA of Orange County and its after-school scholarship program.

The day will begin with exploration and a scavenger hunt at the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by the chili competition, lunch and family entertainment from noon to 2 p.m. The winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m., with prizes and trophies distributed.

Lunch is $5 per person over age 2, and includes chili tastings, one hot dog and one soft drink. Other food items will be available for an additional charge.

Competitions include Best Beef Chili, Best Chicken or Turkey Chili, Best Vegetarian Chili, Favorite Chili, Favorite Chef’s Outfit and Overall Favorite Chili.

The annual Baroque Music Festival of Corona del Mar, founded in 1981, will feature eight concerts this month. The organization seeks to offer “historically stylistic interpretations of the great masterpieces of the Baroque period” (as well as some later works) using period instruments. The season starts June 20 at a 4 p.m. concert featuring Baroque concertos at Saint Michael & All Angels Church, and runs through the finale at 4 p.m. June 27 at Newport Harbor Lutheran Church, featuring Baroque and neo-Baroque Romantic works by Bach, Handel and Brahms.
