Sawdust ‘Springs into Art’

The Sawdust Art Festival invites members of the community to try their hand at glass blowing, painting, textiles and an array of other mediums through its Spring Into Art series, according to Sawdust spokeswoman Cynthia Fung.

The two-day weekend workshop series will kick off with “Beginning Glass Blowing” with Bruce Freund on March 12 and 13, where students will learn the basics of glass blowing and will have the opportunity to create their own piece to take home.

Patrons can also “Play with Fire” in Lorraine Hornby’s jewelry-making course that same weekend, where they will learn the fundamentals of making jewelry and will receive one-on-one instruction to create their own pendant or ring.

Jennifer Wedner will offer “Fun and Function with Clay” on March 13, where she will show students how to assemble a three-dimensional ceramic art piece that is both decorative and useful.

LAM launches spring exhibitions

The Laguna Art Museum will hold an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 26 for its upcoming spring exhibitions: “Extract: Developing Exhibitions from the Collection,” “Landscape and Figuration from the Collection: Early to Mid-Twentieth Century” and “Brad Coleman: Reproductions,” according to a news statement from the museum.

Patrons will have the opportunity to mingle with museum members, artists, and collectors while enjoying a cash bar and the opportunity to view the exhibitions before they open to the public on Feb. 27, said Director of Communications Marni Farmer. The exhibitions will be on display through May 15.

“Extract” will showcase several small, one-person shows from the museum’s permanent collection by Florence Arnold, Elanor Colburn, Laddie John Dill and many others.

“Landscape and Figuration from the Collection” will feature 20th century works from the permanent collection ranging from Impressionism to Modernism, as well as paintings by artists who aligned themselves with a more modernist approach in both landscape and figurative works.

Brad Coleman’s exhibition will feature his “Sheep” drawings, all of which appear to be a reproduction at first glance, but upon careful observation, reveal differences between each of the 12 pieces, according to Farmer.

LPAPA welcomes six new members

The Laguna Plein Air Painters Assn. recently welcomed six new signature members: April Raber of Laguna Beach; Debra Huse of Newport Beach; Jeff Yeomans of San Diego; John Burton of Carmel; Paul Kratter of Moraga; and Bryan Mark Taylor of Lafayette were all selected by a panel of judges after demonstrating the highest level of proficiency in plein air (a French term for outdoor-style painting), according to executive coordinator Rosemary Swimm.

LPAPA was formed in 1996 by a group of local painters whose motive was create a national bond by linking the strong plein air movement of the early California painters to today’s painters. The nonprofit currently represents hundreds of painters throughout the country.
