Getting down in Doheny

Share

After a seven-year hiatus, the Doheny Days Music Festival is coming back to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, and Laguna Beach dentist/musician Ken Garcia is on board.

The two-day festival last appeared in 2004, reportedly having grown a bit too big and wild for the low-key beach venue, according to Garcia.

The big music festival may have outgrown its locale, but “everybody missed it and wanted to bring it back,” Garcia said.

“We’re trying to bring back the surf and beach styles, with good family bands,” Garcia added. “We think it’s going to be one of the biggest Doheny Days they’ve ever had, and that’s great for the future.”

Garcia also plans to present a new “surprise” vocalist. He will perform his flamenco guitar styles with some original songs and “old rock tunes.” He just released an album, “Highway 1 Revisited,” with some references to an old Bob Dylan album.

Attendees on both days can hear 24 sets of live music, according to the event website.

This year’s show features more family-friendly entertainment, including Weezer, Donavon Frankenreiter, the Ken Garcia Band, Common Sense, Black Uhuru andZiggy Marley.

Music won’t be the only thing on the menu: Food and booths will be part of the festival atmosphere.

The festival doors open at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $50 for a single day, with an $80 adult two-day pass also offered. Children 5 and younger are free.

Organizers have also come up with some unique package deals, including Doheny Days beach balls, toys and other specials.

“We want it to have a strong surf vibe,” Garcia said. “It won’t be as crazy as in the past, so it’ll be OK to bring the kids.”

Music set against the backdrop of the Doheny surf is an unbeatable combination, and after his set, Garcia plans to take to the waves. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Tickets are available at Garcia’s dental office. Call (949) 497-3900. Or visit https://www.dohenydays.com.
