E-Book Training

Newport Beach Public Library offers a hands-on eBook training session from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Central Library Friends Room, 1000 Avocado Ave., Newport Beach. Library staff will demonstrate Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, iPad and Sony readers and provide personal instruction for downloading free eBooks from the Overdrive site. Speak Up Newport

Steve Chaitow of BCJ Architects, who is the project architect for the new Civic Center in Newport Beach, will discuss the project during the Speak Up Newport meeting. Opening receptions will be held for two new art shows at UC Irvine. A reception for "A Piano Played by Five Artists: A Solo Project by Koki Tanaka" is from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Room Gallery at UCI's Claire Trevor School of the Arts. A second reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. for "Chiasmus: Zones of Political and Aesthetic Imagination," a new show opening at the school's University Art Galleries.
