Apply for arts grants through Festival

Applications for 2012 art grants from the Festival of Arts Foundation are available, foundation officials announced in a Jan. 9 news release.

Nonprofits with programs that foster the fine arts in and around the city of Laguna Beach have till Feb. 17 to complete applications for grants from the foundation, a nonprofit set up by the Festival of Arts in 1989 to fund Laguna area arts.

People pick can up application forms by going online to https://www.LagunaFestivalofArts.org or stopping by the Festival of Arts offices, at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, during regular business hours.

“As the giving arm of the Festival of Arts, the Foundation continues to provide funding that promotes art education and appreciation for all ages, Scott Moore, president of the Festival of Arts Foundation, said in a prepared statement.

Sustainability is theme of film series

The Laguna Beach Film Society on Friday will kick off a four-month series of documentary film screenings focused around the theme of “The Earth’s Sustainability in Film,” society officials said in an email.

Starting at 7 p.m., two documentaries, “Garbage Warrior” — about an architect who builds homes out of recycled materials like beer cans and soda bottles — and “Plastic Tide” about islands of trash forming in the oceans, will be shown at the Forum Theatre, 650 Laguna Canyon Road, at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach.

Tickets cost $15 at the door.

How do you say ‘chess’ in French?

At 7 p.m. Jan. 19, the South Coast Cinema will screen “Queen to Play,” a romantic film starring Kevin Kline and Sandrine Bonnaire about the board game known among French people as “Les Echecs.”

Tickets cost $15 at the door or $10 for students with IDs. South Coast Cinema is at 162 S. Coast Hwy.

At 6 p.m. on the same evening, the Laguna Beach Film Society will host a pre-screening hour of wine and hors d’oeuvres at the Laguna Art Museum, 307 Cliff Drive.

‘Fresh Paint!’ reception at Debra Huse

An artist and awards reception for “Fresh Paint!,” an exhibition of paintings by members of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Assn., will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Debra Huse Gallery on Balboa Island, Newport Beach, according to an announcement by the association.

Paintings will be available for purchase at the gallery, at 229 Marine Ave. The show will continue until Feb. 4.

Family concert at Anneliese School

Dana Freeman, a violinist with the Pacific Symphony, and Mike Hoffman, the symphony’s principal trombone player will headline a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Anneliese Schools’ Willowbrook campus, 20062 Laguna Canyon Road.

Bill Hunker, a bassoon player who teaches music at Anneliese Schools, and pianist Heinrich Martin will join Freeman and Hoffman in performing the family concert.

It is open to the public and is being presented by SEEDS, a nonprofit promoting children’s education through funding programs in the arts, sciences and humanities, according to its mission statement posted online.

Father-daughter duo to perform

Laguna Beach Live! will present a performance by singers and songwriters Randy and Maia Sharp, a father-and-daughter duo, at 8 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Forum Theatre, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

And, at 6 p.m. Jan. 18, Laguna Beach Live! will kick off the first concert in its Jazz Wednesdays Winter Series in the Laguna Room at Hotel Laguna, 425 S. Coast Hwy, with a performance by The Latin Jazz Syndicate with Bijon Watson on the trumpet.
