'Two Schools of Cool'

Pacific Symphony Concert

The Pacific Symphony and pianist Dejan Lazic will perform Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2, Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and other romantic classics at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Food Drive

The city of Irvine and Second Harvest Food Bank are holding a food drive to help the needy during the holidays. The city and Second Harvest are seeking the following types of food donations, including: canned fruit and juices, canned soups, rice, cereal, canned veggies, canned fish, chicken or meat. MLK Day Service at Fairview

The Rev. Dr. Art Cribbs, executive director of the California Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice group and an ordained minister at the United Church of Christ, will appear at a Martin Luther King Day Jr. service at 10 a.m. at Fairview Community Church, 2525 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa.

Improv Jazz concert

Dutch drummer Han Bennink, along with violinist/violist Mary Oliver, bassist Mark Dresser and trombonist Michael Dessen, will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. in Room 218 of the Music and Media Building at UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of Arts. The program is being presented by the school and its music department, whose faculty includes Dessen.
