Newport-Mesa Unified to expand online registration

COSTA MESA — Registration will be easier and quicker next year for middle and high school students, thanks to an expansion of a pilot online registration system.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District school board this week unanimously approved implementing an online registration and management software program, “K-12 Online,” at all secondary schools in 2012-13.

The program allows parents to fill out everything from emergency cards to health surveys and buy items before school starts.

“In short, it not only met expectations, it far exceeded them,” said George Knights, director of K-12 assessment. “It was our golden program of the fall.”

The program was tried out over the summer first at two 7-12 campuses, Costa Mesa and Corona del Mar middle and high schools, where it won great reviews from families.

Principals at both schools said at the time that enrollment lines averaged around 45 minutes — down from several hours from previous years.

The online program allowed Newport-Mesa’s classified staff to spend less time on registration, thus freeing it to work on other tasks, said Costa Mesa High School Principal Phil D’Agostino.

The program also allowed principals to spend time greeting students and parents instead of troubleshooting and problem-solving, Knights said.

“It’s changed the whole dynamic” of registration, he said.
