The 43rd annual Orange County Home & Garden Show is coming to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa from Friday to Sunday.

The show features garden displays, classes, prizes and information about home improvement projects.

Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Parking is $10.

Coffee championships to pour into Costa Mesa

The 2020 U.S. Coffee Championships will be held this weekend at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

The event will include competitions, unlimited coffee, food trucks, exhibitors and music. The U.S. Barista and U.S. Brewers Cup champions will go on to represent the United States at the World Coffee Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

The event will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, though the U.S. Barista Championship and U.S. Brewers Cup have a soft opening Friday.

Tickets are $5 in advance or $10 at the door. Parking is $10.

Kandace Springs to perform at Samueli Theater

Singer, songwriter and pianist Kandace Springs will perform Saturday at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Samueli Theater.

Friedreich’s ataxia benefit will ride at Bolsa Chica

RideAtaxia, a bike ride benefit for the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance, will be held Saturday at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach.

Funds will help find treatments and a cure for Friedreich’s ataxia, a debilitating neuromuscular disorder.

Same-day registration is $50 at the beach parking lot, 18179 Pacific Coast Hwy. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. and include 12-, 6- and 1-mile rides.

Pub crawl for a cause in Newport on Saturday

Four Newport Beach bars are participating in the fourth annual Winter Bar Crawl for a Cause on Saturday.

Proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Orange County chapter.

The crawl, with an ‘80s ski gear theme, will begin at 1 p.m. at Malarky’s Irish Pub, 3011 Newport Blvd.. and proceed to Helmsman Ale House, Stag Bar + Kitchen and Blue Beet.

Costa Mesa’s Tackle Box closes

Tackle Box, which opened in Costa Mesa’s South Coast Collection in May 2018, has closed.

Co-owner Brian Huskey told the Orange County Register that “it wasn’t the center, it’s just that the timing wasn’t right and it didn’t work out.”

The Tackle Box location in Corona del Mar will remain, though it is temporarily closed. It is scheduled to reopen March 1.

Landscape and nature photography class Saturday in Back Bay

A free landscape and nature photography class is scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Upper Newport Bay Preserve.

The meeting spot is the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center at 2301 University Drive, Newport Beach.

Guests must bring their own camera or photo-capable phone. Parking is free.

Tickets for 3 PacAmp summer concerts going on sale

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday for three shows that are part of this year’s Toyota Summer Concert Series at the Pacific Amphitheatre at the Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Ramon Ayala and Enigma Norteno will perform July 18, Brett Eldredge and Lauren Jenkins on July 23 and Stick Figure with Collie Buddz, the Movement and Iya Terra on July 31.

Tickets include admission to the fair, which runs July 17 through Aug. 16.

Old World hosts German carnival

Old World Village in Huntington Beach will have a German-style carnival from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

There will be traditional food, pastries, activities for children, dances and more.

Laguna Art Museum opens Artemio Sepúlveda exhibit

An exhibition showcasing the works of Mexico-born painter Artemio Sepúlveda opens at the Laguna Art Museum on Sunday.

Sepúlveda lived and worked in Laguna Beach from 1977 to 1999. The exhibit, which runs through May 25, is Sepúlveda’s first in the United States.

General admission to the museum is $7; students and senior citizens get in for $5. Museum members and children younger than 17 are admitted free.

New ownership and name for Sapphire Laguna

Sapphire Laguna has new ownership.

In a statement, Azmin Ghahreman, executive chef and chief executive of Sapphire Culinary Group, said ownership of the Laguna Beach restaurant is being transferred to Russ Bendel, who owns Olea in Newport Beach.

Ghahreman owned Sapphire Laguna for 13 years. He said in a news release that he will be focusing on his other business ventures, which include a culinary school.

Bendel is renaming the restaurant Sapphire, Cellar. Craft. Cook. It is slated to open in April.

Tenants’ rights information session set in Fountain Valley

The Fair Housing Council of Orange County will present a tenant workshop Monday at Fountain Valley City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave.

The session will run from 10 a.m. to noon and address tenants’ rights and housing laws.

Kwanzaa founder to speak at Orange Coast College

Maulana Karenga, creator of Kwanzaa, is scheduled to speak at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Orange Coast College planetarium to commemorate Black History Month.

Kwanzaa is a weeklong secular holiday that celebrates African heritage and identity.

Karenga’s speech is titled “Living the Legacy of Black History: Remembrance, Reflection, Resistance and Remaking the World.”

Admission is free. Parking will be available in Lot E, near Fairview Road and Merrimac Way in Costa Mesa.

‘Barefoot in the Park’ to run at Laguna Playhouse

The Laguna Playhouse is presenting Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park” from Wednesday through March 22.

The city of Newport Beach and Project Hope Alliance are presenting a seminar about youth homelessness on Feb. 27 at the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

Cannabis conference coming to Newport Beach

Officials including Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley will gather for a conference about cannabis legislation on Feb. 27 in Newport Beach.

Lori Ajax, who heads California’s Bureau of Cannabis Control, is the keynote speaker. Doors will open at 2 p.m., with panels from 3 to 6 p.m. and a mixer from 6 to 9.

The conference, sponsored by the Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, will be held at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa, 900 Newport Center Drive.

New York Times columnist to speak in Newport

David Leonhardt, a New York Times op-ed columnist, is set to speak in Newport Beach at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 and 2 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

His speech, part of the Witte Lecture Series, is titled “The American Dream At Risk — Income Inequality and Us.” Tickets are $45, or $40 for members of the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation.

Free tax preparation sessions offered in Costa Mesa

Orange County United Way is sponsoring free tax preparation sessions April 3 in Costa Mesa for households that earned less than $60,000 in 2019.

The Costa Mesa Senior Center, 695 W. 19th St., will host the event from 3 to 7 p.m.

O.C. Community Foundation raises nearly $118,000

The Orange County Community Foundation’s “Love Is” donation drive Feb. 12 raised $117,918 from 421 donors.

The Newport Beach-based foundation will distribute the money to area nonprofits.

“Thanks to the dedicated work of local nonprofits and our compassionate community, teens throughout Orange County will be more empowered to foster respectful, healthy relationships,” Shelley Hoss, the foundation’s president and chief executive, said in a statement.

Cruise of Lights proceeds help local school music programs

The Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee, which organizes the annual Cruise of Lights in Huntington Harbour, recently presented $18,900 in checks to local schools’ music education efforts.

Recipients included Harbour View Elementary School, Huntington Seacliff Elementary School and Ocean View High School.

Alzheimer’s Family Center gets $100,000 grant from Hoag Hospital

The Alzheimer’s Family Center, based in Huntington Beach, has been awarded a $100,000, one-year grant from Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach to help address the transportation needs of senior citizens with dementia diagnoses.

The center’s transportation service takes patients to its facility for day healthcare services.

“We expect to coordinate over 30,000 specialized ADA-compliant [Americans with Disabilities Act] round trips for memory-impaired adult day healthcare patients during the period of the grant,” the Alzheimer’s Family Center said in a news release.

“We are overwhelmed by Hoag’s generosity,” Joanna Richardson-Jones, the center’s chief executive, said in a statement. “They are not only supporting our mission to improve the quality of life for our patients but also giving caregivers more peace of mind.”
