Mariners Church in Irvine was a scene of celebration Thursday morning as 581 Vanguard University undergraduate students marched in commencement, officially becoming the Class of 2022 and another crop of scholars in the Costa Mesa campus’ long history.

In welcoming remarks, Vanguard President Michael Beals expressed his conviction graduates would fulfill the school’s 102-year mission to pursue knowledge, cultivate character, deepen faith and live a life of leadership and service.

“We are confident that you are empowered for a Christ-centered, purpose-filled future,” Beals told the crowd of graduates. “The foundations have been laid, the work has been done, and my hope for you is that the deep mind-, soul- and heart-shaping efforts of a Vanguard University education continue for years and years.”

Speakers included Jason Frenn, a missionary, author and Spanish-language host of the program “Poder para Cambiar” (Power to Change) on Radio Nueva Vida — whose daughter Chanel would commence that afternoon as a Vanguard graduate student.

First-generation college student Candace Martinez, who earned a degree in psychology with minors in theology and biology, also spoke, sharing her excitement at having achieved a personal milestone.

A member of the Psi Chi International Honor Society, Martinez graduated summa cum laude and will pursue a master’s in clinical psychology at Vanguard in the fall.

Beals shared special words for first-generation college students, who comprise 31% of the total graduating class, explaining it takes courage to navigate a new pathway.

“As a first-generation student myself, I am aware of the excitement that comes with being a trailblazer,” he said. “We congratulate you all!”

A second afternoon ceremony at the Irvine church celebrated Class of 2022 graduate students, as well as undergraduate students in the Class of 2020, denied a graduation event during the pandemic.
