Police arrested a homeless man on suspicion of attempted murder after another transient was stabbed outside a Costa Mesa church Friday morning, according to authorities.

Around 10:30 a.m., officers got a call about a stabbing at The Lighthouse church at 1885 Anaheim Ave., according to Costa Mesa police Lt. Vic Bakkila. The Lighthouse is a hub for homeless services in the area.

When officers arrived, they quickly detained a suspect and learned that two men had been fighting over money, Bakkila said.

One of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed the other in the side, police said.

When the stabbing victim dropped to the ground, the attacker kicked him in the face, according to Bakkila.

Paramedics took the injured man to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment of injuries that did not appear life-threatening, Bakkila said.

The suspect was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach for a medical evaluation because he appeared to be high on an unknown drug, according to police. The man’s identity was not immediately available.

Bakkila said detectives are still investigating the case, and police declined to release further details.
