Sleep Out on Superior events set in Costa Mesa to help homeless

Share

Share Our Selves will hold its annual Sleep Out on Superior event this week to raise awareness about homelessness in Orange County.

The event, in its third year, seeks to promote compassion for those who are homeless or hungry. Some participants will sleep overnight Friday in SOS’ parking lot at 1550 Superior Ave. in Costa Mesa as a show of solidarity with homeless people.

Sleep Out on Superior will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday and end Saturday morning.

Tickets are $25, but participants also can contribute $25 worth of hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, shaving cream, socks and diapers.

New this year is a Family Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

That event is open to children 12 and younger accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children can pack hygiene kits, decorate placemats and draw pictures on cards to be given to homeless children and families. Dinner will be provided. Those attending are encouraged to bring hygiene items to donate.

Sleep Out on Superior is being held in conjunction with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which runs the week before Thanksgiving to encourage people to help those in need.

Almost 4,300 people are homeless on any given night in Orange County, according to Share Our Selves, which has service centers throughout the county and provides medical, dental and behavioral health services, along with case management, holiday programs and financial aid.
