THE STUFF -- MIKE SCIACCA

Huntington Beach’s Bryan Osuna is in Englewood, Colorado this weekend

to compete with the California Dual wrestling team as it takes on other

state teams at the National Cadet Freestyle Dual Meet Championships

wrestling competition. The 14-year-old is the lone eighth-grader on a

California roster comprised of high school wrestlers.

Later in July, Osuna will compete in Fargo, North Dakota, as a member

of the California National team at the Cadet National Championships.

Recently, he beat the defending junior state champion to win his

weight division title at the California Cadet State Championships, which

advanced him to this weekend’s competition. A 4.0 student and

valedictorian candidate, Osuna is a student at Calvary Chapel Junior

High. . .

The 2001 Sunset League boys’ all-league volleyball team, which was

announced earlier this week, was dominated by local athletes, who took

all seven first-team spots, and five of eight second-team nominations.

Marina High’s Steffin Rangel and Fountain Valley’s Nate Hagstrom

shared Most Valuable Player honors. The first team is comprised of

Huntington Beach senior Drew Janovick, Edison junior Sean McLaren,

Fountain Valley seniors Russell Holmes and Joe Volz, Marina senior Layton

Bowles and Marina juniors Beau Peters and Drew Wilson. Edison juniors

Chris Gauley and Cole Moulton, Marina senior Chris Roe and junior Jason

Koenig and Fountain Valley sophomore Norman Hutton, earned second-team

honors. . .

Our own Rick Fignetti captured first place in the Senior Mens’

division at last weekend’s Western Championships Hoppy Swarts Memorial,

held in Huntington Beach.

The other Huntington Beach surfer to finish among the top five in a

division was Jeff Combs, who was third overall in the Open Mens’

bodyboard event. . .

I will miss including Fountain Valley youth sports happenings in the

paper. I want to take this time to give sincere thanks and gratitude to

the various Fountain Valley coaches and PR people who worked diligently

to help get their respective league results in our paper. Your dedication

has been invaluable to the Independent, and has helped make the public

aware of just how impressive youth athletics are in your city.
