Summer session ends for Breakers

Mike Sciacca

Summer ball went into the books for the Laguna Beach High girls’

basketball team, which competed for the first time under new coach

Nicholas Ilagan.

Laguna posted a 9-10 record during summer play. The Breakers

entered three tournaments, playing at University High, the American

Hoops Classic and at Liberty Christian.

Laguna was in each of those 10 losses, too, and four of the

setbacks came by a total of seven points.

Nine of the 10 losses the Breakers endured came by six points or

less.

“The entire summer was a great learning experience for both the

girls and I to become acquainted with each other and proved that the

hardest thing for a team to do is repeat as champions,” Ilagan said.

“Overall, I was very proud of the girls. They played many of the

games after going through a rigorous, 2 1/2 -hour practice and

sometimes played two games a day after practices.

“I think regardless of our record, we matured a lot this summer

and have some great things to build on before the season.”

Ilagan noted that the Breakers received “great” defensive

contributions from Chelsea Hairston and Tess Grogan, gained “some

nice” offensive output from Haley Eaves and Emily LaRose, and a “nice

surprise” was the contribution made by incoming, 6-foot-1 freshman,

Katie Daff.
