Census: More Asians, Latinos living in area

Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley recorded a boost in their Asian and Latino populations over the last decade, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures.

Those increases were the most notable for both cities, which saw their white populations drop and other minorities remain about the same. Huntington Beach’s white population fell from 71.8% in 2000 to 67.2% in 2010, while Fountain Valley saw a steeper drop from 58.5% to 49.2%.

While the cities saw no major change in black, Native American or Pacific Islander residents, Huntington Beach saw Asians increase from 9.3% to 10.9% and Latinos from 14.7% to 17.1%.

In Fountain Valley, the same populations grew from 25.6% to 33.1% and 10.7% to 13.1%, respectively.

The numbers reflected trends in Orange County as a whole, where the white population fell from 51.2% to 44.1%, Asians increased from 13.5% to 17.7% and Latinos grew from 30.8% to 33.7%.

The cities lagged behind the county, though, in population growth overall. While Orange County grew 5.8% over the decade, Huntington Beach grew by 0.2% and Fountain Valley by 0.6%.
