Storm cuts power, blows boats off moorings

A severe Pacific storm bringing rain, hail and lightning over Orange County blew multiple boats in Newport Harbor off their moorings that needed to be re-secured, said Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol Sgt. John Hollenbeck.

No other significant damage was reported in Newport Beach.

Southern California Edison reported 101 Costa Mesa customers without power. Systemwide, almost 43,000 customers were temporarily without power as of 10:30 a.m. Monday, Edison spokeswoman Lois Pitter Bruce said.

In addition, a waterspout — a tornado-like formation over the water — was reported 12 miles northwest of Newport Beach, according to the advisory issued at 11:26 a.m. Monday.

The rain is forecasted to last though Monday night, with more showers and strong winds predicted for late Wednesday into Thursday.

The forecast for Tuesday was improved with only a 10% chance of showers, according to the Weather Channel. Rain is expected to return Wednesday night.
