Barbara Hogan Martin
April 5, 1920 to May 17, 2011

Barbara Martin, former school nurse at Newport Harbor High School, passed away peacefully on May 17, under a full moon, at the age of 91. Born in Dover, New Hampshire of hearty New England stock and proud Irish lineage, she was a great healer, a loyal friend and a loving parent.
Barbara entered nursing as a young woman and trained at Massachusetts General Hospital. A registered nurse, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a lieutenant at the outbreak of WWII. She met and married W. Robert Martin, a major in the Army. They settled in Syracuse, New York and raised three children. Using the GI Bill, Barbara obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Syracuse.
In 1963, Barbara and her family settled in Corona del Mar. Through the 60’s and 70’s, as school nurse at Newport Harbor High, she offered counsel and understanding, as well as healthcare, to so many young people during those turbulent years. It was not unusual decades later for former students to express their appreciation.
Never truly retiring, Barbara continued her commitment to the community by volunteering her professional services at the Oasis Senior Center and other venues. Three years ago, Barbara moved from her adored Corona del Mar home to the highly professional and loving environment of the Mesa Verde Residential Care in Costa Mesa. Her granddaughter, Allison, was her most trusted and loving companion.
Barbara touched so many lives and set a shining example of love, acceptance and service. She cherished her friends as a gift from God and those relationships were deep and lasting. Her life will always be celebrated by her children, William, Nancy and John; grandchildren, Allison and Taylor; sister Cecilia Torr; brother Jack Hogan; former daughter-in-law, Ann Kwek; her goddaughter, Judith Littlefield; god-granddaughters, Serena Kirby and Sarah Porter and god-great granddaughters, Jasmine and Isabelle Porter.
