School district schedules safety meeting for Tuesday

School officials will discuss student safety at a special study session scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the district’s headquarters.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustees will review security plans and protocols for the district, spokeswoman Laura Boss said.

The meeting was scheduled after a shooting in Connecticut claimed 28 lives — including those of 20 schoolchildren in class — focused attention on school safety.

Monday was Newport-Mesa students’ first day back since the tragedy Friday.

School board Trustee Katrina Foley said Newport Beach and Costa Mesa police made an effort to be visible at campuses while kids arrived.

“Parents were comforted this morning by that,” Foley said. “It kind of gave them a sense of relief.”

Foley said, however, she believes there are some relatively simple security measures that could be instituted at locals schools such as installing video cameras.

The public study session will be in the Roderick H. MacMillian Board Room at the District Education Center, 2985 Bear St., Costa Mesa.
