Body surfer suffers injury at The Wedge

Share

A body surfer was taken to the hospital with a potential spinal injury suffered at The Wedge in Newport Beach on Wednesday afternoon, lifeguards said.

Paramedics responded about 2 p.m. after a lifeguard called for help near Lifeguard Tower P, which marks the western boundary of The Wedge, a particularly attractive spot for surfers of all kinds at the end of the Balboa Peninsula.

The patient’s condition remained unknown Wednesday, but lifeguard Battalion Chief Rob Williams said the injury seemed minor.

A majority of calls do not result in major or traumatic injuries, but lifeguards always take precautions to protect the spine, he said.

“That controls your movement, motor sensation, extremities and your breathing as well,” Williams said. “So when we have a suspected injury … we will take all precautions necessary to treat the patient.”
