A patient who jumped out of his second-floor window at Mission Hospital Laguna Beach on Friday returned to his room safely with the help of Laguna Beach police and fire departments.

The 19-year-old San Clemente man, who had been in the mental health ward, barricaded his room door, smashed a window and jumped outside onto a metal platform at 11:51 a.m., Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an email.

The man was angry at hospital staff and would not respond to their requests, according to Callus.

Officers intervened and convinced him to allow firefighters to place a ladder against the building and help him down, Callus said.

The man, who suffered minor cuts to his hands from breaking the glass, was delusional but compliant, and authorities readmitted him to the hospital, police said.
