High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ water polo finishes perfect in Surf League
Eli Liechty scored four goals as the Newport Harbor High boys’ water polo team capped an undefeated Surf League campaign with a 12-8 win over Laguna Beach on Wednesday night at Corona del Mar High.
Makoto Kenney added three goals for the Sailors (23-3, 6-0 in league). Gage Verdegaal, Sam Allen, Ike Love, Tommy Kennedy and Ben Liechty each had one goal.
James Nolan had four goals for Laguna Beach (14-12, 0-6), which finished fourth in the four-team league.
Newport Harbor, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2, hosts San Diego Cathedral Catholic on Friday in its regular-season finale, while No. 15 Laguna Beach is at home against Los Alamitos.
Edison 17, Fountain Valley 5: The Chargers finished second in the Wave League after Wednesday’s win at Corona del Mar High.
Edison improved to 12-15 overall and 4-2 in the league. Fourth-place Fountain Valley finished 0-6 in league play.
Los Alamitos 13, Marina 4: The Vikings finished third in the Wave League after Wednesday’s match at Corona del Mar High.
Marina finished the regular season 13-13 overall and 2-4 in the league.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Wave League tournament: Two players from Marina and Huntington Beach advanced to the singles semifinals during the first day of the two-day tournament Wednesday at Marina High.
Top-seeded Mika Ikemori of Marina will play No. 4 Cindy Huynh of Huntington Beach in one semifinal. In the other, No. 2-seeded Kaytlin Taylor of Huntington Beach will face No. 3 Makenna Livingston of Marina.
In doubles, Edison’s Daniella Chan and Cassey Hitch will play No. 4-seeded Chargers teammates Zoe Coggins and Kailee You in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, Shannon Stolaruk and Katie Kerley of Edison will play No. 3-seeded Ella Pachl and Sarah MacCallum of Laguna Beach.
The tournament resumes Thursday at 1 p.m. at Marina.
San Joaquin League tournament: Sage Hill claimed all four spots in the semifinals after Wednesday’s opening rounds at the Webb School in Claremont.
Top-seeded Karina Grover and Miya Stauss will play fourth-seeded Michele Zheng and Courtney Davis. In the other semifinal, Sage Hill’s No. 2-seeded Maddie Dao and Julia Yuen will play No. 3-seeded teammates Kimi Reddy and Lauren Avenatti.
The semifinals will be held Tuesday at Sage Hill, with the finals on Nov. 7.
