College Roundup: Late rally falls short for UC Irvine men’s soccer in Big West tournament

The UC Irvine men’s soccer team lost to Cal State Northridge 3-2 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Big West Conference tournament at home.

The No. 3-seeded Anteaters (7-7-5) trailed 3-0 late in the second half. Christian Gutierrez and Jose Ortiz scored, but No. 6 Northridge held on.

The Matadors play at UC Santa Barbara in Saturday’s semifinals, while UCI waits to see if it has earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast 3, Santiago Canyon 1: The Pirates earned a 25-10, 25-16, 24-26, 25-13 Orange Empire Conference victory Wednesday on the road.

Second-place Orange Coast (17-4, 10-3 in conference) hosts first-place Irvine Valley (19-0, 12-0) on Friday at 6 p.m.

Golden West 3, Santa Ana 0: Madison Holmes had nine kills and 14 digs to lead the visiting Rustlers to a 25-17, 29-27, 25-21 win in Wednesday’s Orange Empire Conference match.

Sierra Emil had nine kills, Jennifer Juarez added eight kills, and Mia Lara contributed 21 digs defensively for Golden West (12-6, 6-6 in conference).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 74, Chapman 49: Aziz Seck had a game-high 13 points and six rebounds to lead the host Lions in Wednesday’s nonconference game.

Kieran Hayward scored 11 points and had three three-pointers. Isaiah Gentry had 10 points, and James Moore pulled down 10 rebounds for Vanguard (2-0).

Former Newport Harbor point guard Sam Barela had eight points, two rebounds and two assists for Chapman.
