High School Roundup: Edison boys’ soccer advances to Hawks Invitational final

The Edison High boys’ soccer team defeated Saddleback 1-0 in a semifinal match of the Hawks Invitational on Friday at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Marcus Henze scored in the 30th minute for the Chargers (9-1) after receiving a drop pass from Grayson Marquez.

Bennett Flory and Dylan Delaney combined on the shutout, their third straight clean sheet of the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Edison edged Estancia 1-0. Will Hooper provided the goal off a throw-in by Chandler Kane.

Delaney had a key save in the final minute against Marcos Arreola, sending the airborne shot over the crossbar.

The Eagles dropped to 1-9-3 with the loss.

Edison, which is ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, will play Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in the championship match at Laguna Hills High on Saturday at noon.

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 2, Fountain Valley 1: Sebastian Rus scored his eighth goal of the season for the Barons (2-6) on Friday in a pool-play match of the Hawks Invitational at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Long Beach Millikan 3, Marina 1: Damiond Mendoza scored the lone goal for the host Vikings (5-4-2) in their quarterfinal match of the Marina Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon.

Marina 2, Samueli Academy 1: Dane Brenton and Pete Frousiakis each scored a goal for the Vikings on Friday morning in a pool-play match of the Marina Holiday Classic.

Seth Cooney and Mendoza provided the assists for Marina.

Fullerton 4, Ocean View 0: The Seahawks (3-8-3) were shut out on Friday afternoon in a quarterfinal match of the Marina Holiday Classic at home.

Ocean View 3, Magnolia 2: Juan Salazar had two goals, and Pablo Martinez also scored for the host Seahawks in a pool-play match on Friday morning in the Marina Holiday Classic.

La Mirada 2, Laguna Beach 0: The Breakers (4-4-1) did not advance out of their group on Friday morning in a pool-play match of the Marina Holiday Classic at Ocean View High.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 10, Carlsbad 3: Emma Lineback scored four goals for the top-seeded Breakers in Friday’s Bill Barnett Holiday Cup quarterfinal match at Newport Harbor High.

Nicole Struss added three goals for Laguna Beach (9-0), which plays Newport Harbor in the semifinals Saturday at 10:40 a.m. The Breakers are trying to win the tournament for the seventh straight year.

Laguna Beach also beat Edison 22-1 in the first round. Molly Renner and Skylar Kidd each scored four goals.

Newport Harbor 11, Santa Margarita 8: Taylor Smith scored six goals for the Sailors, who upset the No. 4-seeded Eagles in the Bill Barnett Holiday Cup quarterfinal match Friday at Newport Harbor High.

Morgan Netherton had four goals and Anna Reed made 11 saves for Newport Harbor (8-0), which also beat Santa Barbara 9-2 in the first round.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Cactus (Ariz.) 63, Corona del Mar 56: Jack Stone scored 29 points for the Sea Kings in the semifinals of the Cactus Winter Hoops Shootout tournament Friday in Phoenix, Ariz.

Vanis Buckholz added 13 points for CdM.

The Sea Kings (10-4) also beat Poston Butte (Ariz.) 69-37 earlier Friday behind 29 points from Efe Gucoglu.

Newport Harbor 80, Fullerton 32: Ryan Miller scored 14 points for the Sailors in the Century Elks Holiday Classic game Friday.

Luke Bashore added 13 points for Newport Harbor (12-4).

Marina 63, Los Alamitos 56: The Vikings improved to 9-7 after Friday’s win in the Orange Holiday Classic.

Estancia 55, Bolsa Grande 40: The Eagles are 12-3 after winning Friday’s Estancia Coast Classic game.

Warren 51, Huntington Beach 32: Huntington Beach is 5-9 after losing Friday’s Orange Holiday Classic game.

Pacifica 71, Los Amigos 42: The Lobos are 7-8 after dropping Friday’s game at the Estancia Coast Classic.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sage Hill 58, Escondido San Pasqual 43: Emily Elliott had 26 points, 17 rebounds and five assists to lead the Lightning (9-4) on Friday in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego.

Zoe Mazakas also had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Isabel Gomez had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.

San Diego Rancho Bernardo 44, Fountain Valley 32: Zoe Ziegler paced the Barons (8-7) with 17 points in Friday’s game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego.

Segerstrom 50, Edison 47: Sarah Gray had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Chargers (8-8) in Friday’s pool-play game of the Larry Doyle and Dan Wiley Tournament of Champions at Marina High.

Brooklyn Chang had nine points, all of which were scored from behind the three-point line.

Huntington Beach 52, Whittier La Serna 24: Akemi Tanga had a team-high 17 points to lead the Oilers (9-4) in Friday’s game of the Garden Grove Tournament.

Marisa Tanga also had 10 points for Huntington Beach.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach 1, Mater Dei 1 (Huntington Beach wins 4-2 on penalty kicks): Summer Stewart scored in regulation as the Oilers advanced past the Monarchs in the Excalibur Tournament of Champions quarterfinals Friday at Silverlakes Sports Complex.

Stewart, Cina Wilson and Liz Johnson all added penalty-kick goals and Riley Urquiza blocked three shots.

Huntington Beach (2-3-5) plays in a tournament semifinal Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The final is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Newport Harbor 3, Phelan Serrano 1: Jenna McConnaughey, Reese Bodas and Skylynn Rodriguez all scored for the Sailors in the North Orange County Classic pool-play match Friday at Newport Harbor High.

The win, combined with the Sailors’ 1-0 win over Temescal Canyon earlier Friday, meant that Newport Harbor (12-2) advanced to the “ABCD” Division semifinals Saturday at 3:15 p.m. at home. Sadie Pitchess scored the winning goal in the win over Temescal Canyon.

San Diego Cathedral Catholic 3, Edison 0: The Chargers (5-3-1) were blanked in the Excalibur Tournament of Champions quarterfinals on Friday night at Silverlakes Sports Complex in Norco.
