High School Roundup: Laguna Beach girls’ water polo starts Surf League with win over Newport Harbor

Emma Lineback scored three goals for the Laguna Beach High girls’ water polo team in a 13-9 win over Newport Harbor on Tuesday in a Surf League opener at Corona del Mar High.

Morgan Van Alphen, Rachael Carver and Molly Renner each scored twice for Laguna Beach (12-1), the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2 poll. Imani Clemons, Jessie Rose, Emma Singer and Nicole Struss also scored, and goalkeeper Lauren Schneider made eight saves.

Ashley Salem and Taylor Smith each scored three goals for No. 3 Newport Harbor (9-3), which got one goal apiece from Olivia Giolas, Morgan Netherton and Alex Love.

Corona del Mar 5, Los Alamitos 4: Grace Myers had three goals for the host Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Surf League opener.

Kaity Greenwald scored twice for CdM (4-6), ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2. Los Alamitos is No. 7.

Estancia 17, Savanna 2: Cassie Corrigan scored six goals for the Eagles in Tuesday’s nonleague match at Western High.

Gidget Brestel had four goals and three assists for Estancia (9-4).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Fountain Valley 48, Huntington Beach 44: Kat Luu had 15 points, five assists and three rebounds to lead the host Barons in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover game.

Caitlin Okawa added eight points, four rebounds and three assists for Fountain Valley (10-10). Margaret Tengan also had eight points, two assists and two steals.

Huntington Beach fell to 14-5.

Corona del Mar 70, Laguna Beach 20: Haley Esquino had a game-high 21 points for the visiting Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover game.

Trasara Alexander added 16 points, and Dorothy Schwenck chipped in with 12 points for CdM (14-5).

Laguna Beach dropped to 9-10.

Los Alamitos 52, Marina 37: Malia Kawakubo had a game-high 20 points for the host Vikings, who dropped to 4-14 following Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover game.

Lauren Shimizu had a team-high 17 points for the Griffins (4-14).

Sage Hill 46, Avalon 27: Emily Elliott had 18 points and 15 rebounds for the host Lightning on Tuesday in a San Joaquin League opener.

Isabel Gomez added 20 points and eight rebounds, and Megan Shean also provided eight points and six steals for Sage Hill (12-4).

Estancia 26, Santa Ana 22: Mackenzie Sanchez had seven points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles on Tuesday in an Orange Coast League opener at home.

Lizbeth Espinoza-Sanchez added four points and six steals for Estancia (3-16), which snapped a 12-game losing streak.

Westminster 46, Ocean View 29: The Seahawks dropped their Golden West League opener at home on Tuesday.

Ocean View fell to 6-13.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach 4, Fountain Valley 1: Summer Stewart had a goal and three assists for the visiting Oilers in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match.

Julia Tran, Emma Radzai and Ella Davison also scored for Huntington Beach (4-5-3). Brook Spahr had an assist.

Fountain Valley, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, fell to 7-6-2.

Newport Harbor 0, Edison 0: Goalkeeper Itzia Rivera made four saves for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match on the road.

Newport Harbor defenders Samara Golan, Jenna McConnaughey, Makenzie Trigo, Nicole Laz and Elizabeth Peters helped the Sailors (14-2-1), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, earn their 11th shutout of the season.

Newport Harbor hosts rival Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay match on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Edison (7-3-2) hosts Laguna Beach on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Corona del Mar 0, Laguna Beach 0: The Sea Kings, ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, are now 10-0-1 after tying Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover road match.

Laguna Beach is 4-2-3.

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar 78, Laguna Beach 0: The host Sea Kings improved to 11-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Wave League on Tuesday.

Laguna Beach (0-1 in league) will be part of a three-way dual meet at Newport Harbor on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Huntington Beach will also compete at the league meet.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Ocean View 54, Westminster 51: The Seahawks improved to 12-8 after winning their Golden West League opener at home on Tuesday.
