Costa Mesa’s Malia Tufuga earns share of Orange Coast League MVP in girls’ volleyball

Costa Mesa High senior Malia Tufuga capped a sterling career by earning a share of the Orange Coast League MVP award in girls’ volleyball.

Tufuga, a four-time first-team all-league selection in the sport, never missed the CIF Southern Section playoffs in her four seasons with the program.

Costa Mesa went 19-10 overall and 8-2 in the league, finishing in second place. The Mustangs lost to Riverside JW North in five sets in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs.

The Mustangs employed a 6-2 offense again this season, allowing Tufuga to shine as a setter and opposite. She signed with Stanford to continue her indoor volleyball career.

Senior libero Rae Galarion, junior middle blocker Tarah Harmon and sophomore middle blocker Lorelei Hobbis received first-team selections for the Mustangs.

Estancia had junior outside hitter Louise Chupeau named to the first team.

Costa Mesa senior outside hitters Emily Paulsen and Frinny Ross also made the second team.

Senior middle blocker Sydni White, junior middle blocker Cassie Corrigan and sophomore outside hitter Ruby Uchytil received second-team honors for the fourth-place Eagles (9-16, 4-6 in league).

Calvary Chapel senior outside hitter Makenzie Hill shared the league MVP award with Tufuga. Calvary Chapel (25-5, 10-0) repeated as the league champion.
