College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball tops Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Collin Welp and Evan Leonard each scored 18 points as the UC Irvine men’s basketball team earned a 74-67 Big West Conference win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday night at Bren Events Center.

Eyassu Worku had a career-high 10 assists for UC Irvine (12-9, 4-1 in conference). Brad Greene contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.

Cal Poly fell to 4-15 overall, 1-4 in conference.

UC Irvine plays at UC Davis on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 62, Hope International 61: Aziz Seck had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference road game.

Michael Magee scored 11 points for Vanguard (11-10, 4-5 in conference).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Long Beach State 56, UC Irvine 46: Haleigh Talbert had 15 points for the Anteaters in Saturday’s Big West Conference game at Bren Events Center.

Lauren Saiki added 12 points for UCI (5-14, 1-4 in conference).

Hope International 67, Vanguard 52: Estefania Giner had 15 points for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference game on the road.

Tristen Rollon and Michaella Elad each scored 10 points for Vanguard (14-3, 7-2 in conference).

BASEBALL

Vanguard 9, Westcliff 5: Grady Conner was two for three with a double, a triple, two runs scored and one driven in for the Lions in the first game of Saturday’s nonconference doubleheader at Vanguard.

Matt Lester got the win in relief for Vanguard (3-0).

Vanguard 12, Westcliff 1: Grady Conner was three for four with two runs batted in as the Lions swept Saturday’s doubleheader.

Aki Buckson had two hits and two RBIs, and Devin Sutorious pitched five shutout innings for the win.

Palomar 12, Golden West 7: Luke Chung was two for five with a triple and three runs batted in for the Rustlers in Saturday’s nonconference road game.

Jesse Fonteboa also had a pair of hits for Golden West (1-1).

SOFTBALL

La Verne 2, Vanguard 0: Tatiana Tabizon and Johanna Lewis each had a pair of hits for the Lions (0-2) in the first game of Saturday’s nonconference doubleheader on the road.

La Verne 2, Vanguard 1: Emily Howard had a hit and run batted in for the Lions in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Golden West 10, Rio Hondo 9 (10 innings): The Rustlers improved to 1-1 this season with Saturday’s win at San Diego Mesa College.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Berkeley 12, UC Irvine 11: The No. 3-ranked Anteaters suffered their first loss of the season Saturday, at the hands of host No. 6 Cal at the Cal Cup.

Tara Prentice scored a career-high five goals for UC Irvine (3-1).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 8, Westmont 1: The Anteaters breezed to victory in their nonconference season opener Saturday at Cal State Northridge.

Flora Amiri, Jessica Tsukiji, Alyssia Fossorier and Jenna Schlatter all won in singles and doubles for UC Irvine.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational

UC Irvine sophomore Zani Meaders finished 13th in the 400 meters, breaking her own school record Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Meaders finished in a personal-best 55.59 seconds (55.70 altitude-adjusted).

UC Irvine’s Sha’Maya Flanagan, Mychal Robinson, Tess Mathes and Meaders also broke the school record in the 4x400 relay. The quartet finished sixth in 3 minutes, 49.74 seconds (3:50.18 altitude-adjusted).

UC Irvine will be back in action on Feb. 7-8, when it heads back to Albuquerque to compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
