High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ soccer gets even with CdM in Battle of the Bay rematch

Jack Starnes scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime to give the Newport Harbor High boys’ soccer team a 2-1 win over rival Corona del Mar on Wednesday in a Surf League match at home.

Kevin Soltero also scored a goal for the Sailors (10-4-1, 2-2 in league).

Chase Marion provided the goal for the Sea Kings (10-5, 3-1).

Edison 3, Los Alamitos 2: Armand Pigeon scored twice for the host Chargers on Wednesday in a Surf League match.

Grayson Marquez also scored a goal for Edison (13-5-1, 2-2 in league).

Los Amigos 9, La Quinta 0: Jose Felipe, Edgar Cachu and Humberto Rincon each scored two goals for the visiting Lobos on Wednesday in a Garden Grove League match.

Jonathan Alarcon contributed a goal and three assists for Los Amigos (8-2-4, 5-1-1 in league). Martin Sanchez and Derrick Villegas each had one goal.

Brandon Santos made two saves to record the shutout.

Estancia 1, Santa Ana 1: Chris Ayala scored a goal for the host Eagles on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League match.

Edwin Raymundo recorded an assist, and Cesar Pedroza stopped eight shots for Estancia (3-11-6, 2-2-3 in league).

Costa Mesa 4, Orange 4: On Wednesday, the visiting Mustangs went unbeaten for the sixth time in seven Orange Coast League matches.

Costa Mesa is now 4-8-7 overall and 2-1-4 in the league.

Ocean View 1, Western 1: Anthony Ruiz scored for the Seahawks on Wednesday in a Golden West League match on the road.

Ocean View (5-8-8, 2-0-5 in league) has earned a tie in five consecutive contests.

Laguna Beach 3, Marina 1: Eric Church scored the goal for the Vikings on Wednesday in a Wave League match on the road.

Marina dropped to 7-9-3 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Laguna Beach improved to 6-9-2 and 1-3.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 59, Newport Harbor 42: Jack Stone had 30 points for the visiting Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Surf League game.

Matt DeCrona scored nine points for CdM (16-9, 1-3 in league), and Scott Truninger had seven.

Robbie Spooner scored 18 points for Newport Harbor (21-6, 3-2), and Ryan Miller added seven.

The Sea Kings play at Edison on Friday at 7 p.m., while Newport Harbor closes out league play at home against the Chargers on Feb. 5.

Los Alamitos 74, Edison 60: Jackie Kwok had 20 points for the host Chargers in the Surf League game Wednesday.

Bradley Luna added 13 points for Edison (16-10, 3-1 in league), which stayed in first place by half a game after Newport Harbor lost to CdM.

Los Alamitos is 16-10 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Costa Mesa 55, Orange 33: Aiden Spallone had 16 points for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League road game.

Christian Dasca scored 11 points and Blake Wolf had 10 for Costa Mesa (9-17, 4-4 in league), which is tied for third place in the league.

Laguna Beach 66, Marina 23: Willie Rounaghi had 13 points for the Breakers in Wednesday’s Wave League game at home.

Chase Hall scored 12 points and Brooks Hogenauer had 11 for Laguna Beach (18-7, 4-0 in league).

Eric Hodgkins led Marina (10-16, 1-3) with eight points.

The Breakers can clinch the outright league title with a win at home against Fountain Valley on Friday.

Fountain Valley 47, Huntington Beach 37: The Barons improved to 3-1 in the Wave League with Wednesday’s home win.

Fountain Valley is 14-7 overall.

Huntington Beach fell to 5-20 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Los Amigos 55, La Quinta 41: The Lobos stayed on top in the Garden Grove League after Wednesday’s road win.

Los Amigos is 15-8 overall and 6-1 in the league, a game ahead of Bolsa Grande.

The Lobos play at Rancho Alamitos on Friday at 7 p.m.
