High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ water polo beats rival CdM to clinch second in Surf League

Taylor Smith and Avery Montiel each had three goals, helping the Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo team beat rival Corona del Mar 7-3 in a Surf League finale Tuesday night at home.

With the win, Newport Harbor (20-7, 4-2 in league) clinched outright second place. CdM (12-16, 2-4) finished in third and is eliminated from playoff contention due to a sub-.500 overall record.

Morgan Netherton also scored for the Sailors, and Anna Reed made 11 saves. Newport Harbor outscored CdM 5-0 in the second half.

Laguna Beach 9, Los Alamitos 5: Nicole Struss scored four goals as the Breakers finished an undefeated Surf League campaign Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.

Jessie Rose and Molly Renner each added two goals for Laguna Beach (26-1, 6-0 in league), which concludes the regular season with a home match Friday at 4:15 p.m. against Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.

Huntington Beach 15, Marina 4: The Oilers finished the regular season as undefeated Wave League champions after Tuesday’s finale at Newport Harbor High.

Huntington Beach is now 13-12 overall and 6-0 in the league. Third-place Marina fell to 16-11 and 2-4.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 1, Huntington Beach 0: The Chargers finished in second place in the Surf League after Tuesday’s road win, clinching a berth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Grace Ingalls scored the match-winning goal in the 69th minute, assisted by Nicole Field, for Edison (11-5-4, 3-2-1 in league). Goalkeeper Allyssa Plotkin had four saves for the shutout, while Lucy Granger, Abby McCollum, Sophia Drake and Kelli McKay also led the defensive effort.

Huntington Beach (10-9-6, 2-4) finished tied for third and can apply for an at-large berth into the postseason.

Los Alamitos 3, Corona del Mar 1: Kennedy Campbell had a second-half goal for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Surf League finale at Bonita Creek Park.

Jordan Needham had the assist for CdM (12-5-2, 2-4 in league), which finished tied for third in the four-team league with Huntington Beach.

The Sea Kings can apply for an-large berth into the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Newport Harbor 2, Fountain Valley 0: Ande Siegel and Sadie Pitchess scored for the host Sailors in Tuesday’s Wave League match.

Skylynn Rodriguez and Samara Golan each had assists for the Sailors (15-5-4, 2-2-1 in league), and goalkeeper Jessica Gardner made two saves in the shutout.

Fountain Valley is now 9-12-3 overall and 0-5-1 in league play.

Newport Harbor closes out league play at home against Laguna Beach on Thursday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Los Alamitos 1, Newport Harbor 0: The visiting Sailors fell to 10-5-1 overall and 2-3 in the Surf League following Tuesday’s match.

Newport Harbor plays host to Edison (14-5-1, 3-2) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Chargers are tied for first place with Corona del Mar (10-6, 3-2), which ends its season with a home match against Los Alamitos (7-6-5, 2-3) on Wednesday at Bonita Creek Park at 4 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 56, Fountain Valley 54: Willa Rath had 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Sailors to an upset victory in a Wave League game on the road Tuesday.

Cydney Jover added 13 points, four assists and three steals for Newport Harbor (13-14, 3-3 in league). Chloe Swanson had nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals, and Emma Fults chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Kat Luu led the Barons (16-12, 5-1) with 14 points. Audrey Tengan and Madison Suekawa each had 12 points.

Marina 52, Laguna Beach 45: Greta Graeler had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the visiting Vikings in a Wave League finale on Tuesday.

Malia Kawakubo also had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Marina (8-20, 4-2 in league).

Laguna Beach wraps up the season at 10-18 overall and 0-6 in the league.

Huntington Beach 62, Edison 22: Andie Payne had 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and the host Oilers completed an undefeated run through the Surf League on Tuesday.

Marisa Tanga had 11 points for Huntington Beach (22-5, 6-0 in league). Alyssa Real and Jessica Doke each had eight points.

Edison finishes the regular season at 15-13 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Corona del Mar 62, Los Alamitos 41: Makena Tomlinson had a team-high 19 points to lead the Sea Kings in a Surf League finale at home on Tuesday.

Nia Halafuka added 15 points for CdM (21-7, 4-2 in league), and Tori Gyselaar also had 14 points.

Loara 43, Los Amigos 34: The host Lobos fell to 11-15 overall and 1-8 in Garden Grove League play following Tuesday’s action.

Segerstrom 52, Ocean View 25: The Seahawks dropped to 7-20 overall and 1-8 in the Golden West League with Tuesday’s loss at home.
