High School Roundup: Marina girls’ cross-country edges out win over Huntington Beach

The Marina High School girls’ cross-country team remained unbeaten through two contests this season, narrowly defeating host Huntington Beach 27-28 in a Huntington Beach Union High School District dual meet on Saturday.

Marikay Schwab (first, 17:23.8), Makena Castillo (second, 17:55.9), Ella Murray (fifth, 18:55.5), Elizabeth Krysinski (ninth, 19:46.5) and Madelyn Fracasse (10th, 20:04.8) filled out the scoring quintet for the Vikings.

Huntington Beach pushed its scoring five across with only three Marina runners in, but it wasn’t enough. Claire Lewis (third, 18:33.4) and Quinn Roldan (fourth, 18:41.7) were the top performers for the Oilers.

Edison 18, Westminster 37: All five of Edison’s scoring runners placed in the top six, as the visiting Chargers earned their first win of the Huntington Beach Union High School District dual meets on Saturday.

Hallie Chen (first, 21:34.9), Sloane Ludloff (second, 21:52.7), Kiwi Stevens (fourth, 22:01.2), Marley Aguirre (fifth, 22:18.2) and Kaitlin Chan (sixth, 22:39.4) formed the scoring set for the Chargers.

Los Alamitos 26, Laguna Beach 29: Freshmen Hallie Muniz (first, 18:13.0) and Kaitlyn McQuillen (second, 18:32.3) led the host Griffins to victory in a close contest on Saturday.

Laguna Beach received top-five finishes from junior Coco Reed (third, 18:43.0) and senior Grace Wilson (fourth, 18:57.2).

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY


Huntington Beach 24, Marina 31: The Oilers earned their first win of the Huntington Beach Union High School District dual meets on Saturday at home.

Huntington Beach junior Nolan Walt notched his second individual win in as many races with a time of 16:17.4.

Marina’s Vincent Beaumont was the runner-up, crossing the finish line in 16:21.8.

Edison 15, Westminster 50: Wylie Cleugh won the race in 16:33 flat, as the Chargers put up a perfect team score against the host Lions in a Huntington Beach Union High School District dual meet on Saturday.

Christopher Chan (second, 17:07.4), Jeff Ritter (third, 17:13.5), Samson Rakhshani (fourth, 17:13.8) and Luke Fowler (fifth, 17:22.3) rounded out the scoring quintet for Edison.

Los Alamitos 25, Laguna Beach 35: Senior Mateo Bianchi (first, 15:49.4) and sophomore Christopher Drews (second, 16:19.5) claimed the top two spots for the visiting Breakers, but six Griffins finished in succession thereafter to lead Los Alamitos to victory in Saturday’s contest.

Los Alamitos was led by junior Tyler Austin, who placed third with a time of 16:24.0.
