High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ water polo beats rival Harvard-Westlake

Finn Genc and Richie Rimlinger each scored two goals as the Newport Harbor High School boys’ water polo team beat rival Studio City Harvard-Westlake 9-6 at home Monday in a nonleague match.

Eli Liechty, Ben Liecthy, Gage Verdegaal, Cole Borggreve and Billy Rankin each scored once for the Sailors (3-0). Cooper Mathisrud made 14 saves.

Newport Harbor and Harvard-Westlake met in the 2018 and 2019 CIF Southern Section Division 1 title matches, with the Wolverines winning each time.

Newport Harbor returns to action when it hosts Huntington Beach in a key Surf League match on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 18, Studio City Harvard-Westlake 6: Morgan Netherton scored six goals for the Sailors in Monday’s nonleague match at Newport Harbor High School.

Taylor Smith and Lily Gess each scored twice for Newport Harbor (2-1). Alex Love and Avery Montiel each scored twice, and Sophia Stark and Paige Naegle also found the back of the net.

Anna Reed made six saves for Newport Harbor, and Madi Swart added three saves.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Laguna Beach 9, Aliso Niguel 9 (Laguna Beach wins 82-73 on games): Ian MacLaughlin and Taro Sakai each won twice in singles to pace the Breakers in Monday’s nonleague road match.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach 2, Edison 0: The Oilers topped the Chargers in a Sunset Conference crossover match Monday night at Edison High School.

Carson Dykes had a goal and an assist for Huntington Beach. Tika Kakimoto opened the scoring.
