High School Roundup: Huntington Beach boys’ volleyball exacts revenge at Santa Barbara

Senior opposite Trent Douphner had a team-high 19 kills, and the Huntington Beach High School boys’ volleyball team defeated host Santa Barbara 25-22, 18-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-13 on Thursday in a CIF State Southern California Regional Division II semifinal match.

The Oilers (16-5) turned the tables on the Dons after falling at Santa Barbara in five sets in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 final on Saturday.

Senior outside hitter Cayman LaFontaine had 18 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Liam Phinizy added 15 kills for the Oilers.

Huntington Beach will travel to take on top-seeded San Diego Torrey Pines in a regional championship match on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Marina 3, San Diego Francis Parker 0: Senior outside hitter Daniel Purtell had 14 kills and three blocks to lead top-seeded Marina to a 25-13, 25-17, 27-25 win at home in a CIF State Southern California Regional Division III semifinal match.

Senior outside hitter Aidan Patterson added 12 kills for the Vikings (12-5). Freshman setter Dyllan Nguyen contributed 33 assists, and junior libero Joseph Nunez compiled 20 digs.

SOFTBALL

Ocean View 1, San Marcos 0: Senior pitcher Desyree Arizmendi threw a complete-game shutout for the host Seahawks in Thursday’s CIF Southern Section Division 5 semifinal game.

Arizmendi recorded 12 strikeouts in the contest. She allowed just five hits and issued no walks.

Freshman infielder Sienna Erskine scored the game’s only run in the fourth inning. Senior outfielder Ari Hencke had two hits and a run batted in. Shortstop Ashley Capelouto also had one hit for the Seahawks.

Ocean View (16-10) will take on Upland Western Christian (19-1) in the championship game next week. The Seahawks will be making their first appearance in the CIF finals since 2008.
