After leading the Ocean View High School softball team to the CIF Southern Section Division 5 championship, senior pitcher Desyree Arizmendi received divisional Player of the Year honors.

Arizmendi went 9-3 in the circle for the Seahawks this season, posting a 1.44 earned run average over 78 innings. She recorded 109 strikeouts against just 12 walks.

Ocean View defeated top-seeded Upland Western Christian 2-1 in the Division 5 final. Arizmendi, who is headed to the University of La Verne, allowed an unearned run on three hits while striking out six in a complete-game victory.

Five local softball players earned All-CIF honors, including Arizmendi’s battery mate in catcher Nivea Armenta, who had a key double in the seventh inning of the championship game.

Armenta had a .427 batting average to go with eight doubles for the Seahawks.

Ocean View coach Jose Smith was also named the Division 5 Coach of the Year after leading the Seahawks to their first CIF title since 2008. Ocean View (17-10, 6-4) finished in a tie with Godinez for second in the Golden West League.

Huntington Beach pitcher Devyn Greer (Division 1), Edison pitcher Jenna Gorden (Division 2) and Corona del Mar first baseman Makena Tomlinson (Division 6) were also recognized.

Greer, a two-way threat, went 9-2 as a starter, compiling 123 strikeouts over 80 innings for the Oilers. She pitched to a microscopic 0.70 ERA and issued just 15 walks.

At the plate, the Iowa signee hit .472 with 37 runs batted in, 10 home runs, three doubles and two triples.

Huntington Beach (21-5, 7-2) won the Surf League championship. The Oilers lost on the road to Mater Dei 3-2 in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs.

Gorden, an Oregon Tech signee, was able to keep the Chargers in contention by keeping the opposition’s bats in check with a 2.18 ERA.

Edison went 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the Surf League, but the third-place Chargers did not receive an at-large berth into the Division 2 playoffs.

Tomlinson has been a source of offensive production as a power hitter for the Sea Kings since joining the team as a freshman, but Corona del Mar (4-12, 3-6) struggled as a team in finishing third in the Wave League.

The Sea Kings notched a nonleague win against Costa Mesa. Laguna Beach forfeited all of its Wave League games this season, including three scheduled against CdM.
